Reporting a Fault on the Highway
Kent County Council (KCC) is responsible for the maintenance of roads and pavements not on private land. You can report non-urgent issues online to KCC directly using this link –https://www.kent.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/report-a-problem. Examples of the types of faults you can report include:
- street lights not working
- potholes
- drainage
- overgrown vegetation (including hedges and grass).
To report any emergency issues, for example a fallen tree blocking the road, please call KCC immediately on 03000 418181 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday or on 03000 419191 at all other times.
Reporting a Fault on a Public Right of Way
KCC Public Rights of Way (PROW) team is responsible for the maintenance of public footpaths. You can report non-urgent issues online online to KCC directly using this link –Report a problem on a right of way – Kent County Council. Examples of the types of faults you can report include:
- broken stiles
- overgrown vegetation or fallen trees
- damaged or dangerous path surfaces
- damaged or missing signposts.
Please submit a separate report for each individual problem. This helps KCC to identify and inspect the correct location and update you on progress more accurately.
In an emergency (something on a public right of way which can cause an injury or accident) call 03000 41 71 71 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

The Parish Council receives notifications from KCC of upcoming road closures and these will be posted as news items on the website. News items can be found by clicking on the link below or we encourage you to subscribe on the home page and you’ll be sent notification of news items automatically:

Highways Improvement Plan
KCC works closely with parish councils through the use of a Highways Improvement Plan to establish highway related needs and aspirations for parishes. Highway Improvement Plans can be amended regularly should any items be raised so if any residents wish to suggest improvements, please contact the Parish Clerk who can put these suggestions to the Parish Council for consideration.

If you wish to view a map of the various public footpaths within the parish, please visit Kent County Council’s website by clicking the link below:
You do not need to have an account to access the map. Please use the search criteria on the left hand side, select the option you wish to use to narrow down your search (for example, select ‘Parish’ and put Chartham in the text box) and then the site will bring up a map to your criteria. You can click on the map and move using your mouse to scroll through the map and you can zoom into a specific section.
